Dr Tumelo Tlhoiwe

Distinguished guests We give thanks to the Government of Botswana through its varied Ministries and some represented here today, for taking decision to introduce Higher Education Training Providers into the Private Sector, DDT College of Medicine being one of them. In its 9 years of existence, DDT College programs have seen recognition by the international universities and its graduates have been admitted for Masters Degrees in University of Zambia, London Metropolitan University, University of Liverpool, etc and there are even some Doctor Assistants who are now pursuing doctor of medicine in University of Eden in Zambia. Some DDT graduates have completed their Masters degrees during the time they were Staff Fellows at DDT and today they are lecturers in the same system that produced them, some DDT Laboratory Scientists are USA board certified and that means they can now work in the USA. We at DDT College of Medicine are pleased and elated that now DDT offers an International Doctor of Medicine Program in collaboration with St George’s University School of Medicine. The program is set in such a way that students enroll in the first 2 years of DDT Doctor Assistant Program Basic Sciences (BDA curriculum was reviewed and approved by SGU/USA academic board) and after completing the basic sciences the said students will then transfer to St George’s University School of Medicine to be admitted directly into full Doctor of Medicine Program. As we speak we have some students who are already admitted into this program. In terms of employment, DDT graduates are hired nationwide both by the private sector including the mining sector, the BDF, Police, SSG, Ministry of Health, some are working as far as in Germany and Australia, some graduates were given scholarship by the Merk Foundation to pursue Fellowship in Assisted Reproduction and Embryology in India, Know that “DDT” stands for “Ditiro Di Teng” meaning that there are endless job opportunities with DDT. DDT College continues to be mentored by international professors from Yale University, Emory University, Michigan University which all in the USA. Honored Guests According to a WHO report, the world will be short of 12.9 million health-care workers by 2035; today, the figure stands at 7.2 million. A WHO report released in November 2013 warns that these findings – if not addressed now – will have serious implications for the health of billions of people across all regions of the world As we stand today, the burden of disease secondary to the covid 19 pandemic is likely to be enormous and not limited to the acute disease alone and hence more health professionals are needed to mitigate the long term effects of this disease.
